DEVELOPMENT OF PHARMACIST REMUNERATION MODELBASED ON VALUE-BASED PRICING IN PHARMACIES

Pharmacists have an important role in health services, especially in pharmaceutical services. In providing pharmaceutical services, personal professional rewards and equal compensation are also needed. This study aimed to obtain a value-based pricing based pharmacist remuneration model  in pharmacies. This research was done with a multi-stage method by conducting observational studies to obtain the existing profile of pharmacists and patient perceptions of pharmacists in performing pharmaceutical services. Furthermore, a literature study and semi-structured interview was carried out to compile a remuneration model and continued with the focus group discussion (FGD).  The validated questionnaire was used to assess pharmacist and patient perceptions of pharmacist and patient competence, communication skills, ethics and emotional intelligence in delivering pharmacy services. Most pharmacists (95%) agreed that pharmacists had good competence. Based on self-rating, 94% pharmacist respondents rated that they had good communication skills and 100% felt they had good ethics in carrying out pharmaceutical services. In emotional intelligence, most pharmacists (90%) agreed that they hade good emotional intelligence. From patients’ point of view, 94% agreed that pharmacists had good competence, 96% considered that pharmacists had good ethics and, and 90% rated that pharmacists had good communication skills. On the emotional intelligence variable, 92% stated that pharmacists had good emotional intelligence. Factors for assessing the price of pharmacist positions in providing pharmaceutical services in pharmacies consisted of five factors, i.e., the Know How aspect consisting of factors  of competence, ethics, and communication skills of  pharmacists; the problem solving aspect consisting of the pharmacist’s emotional intelligence factor; and the accountability factor  consisting of  the pharmacist’s  authority factor. The remuneration model can be developed and implemented in community pharmacies such as pharmaceutical management practices, prescription drug services, self-medication, counseling, and home pharmacy care.
